Vote now!

I'm just taking a break from loading firing XXI to let you know that I will be in St.Paul, MN this next week for the American Craft Council show, April 19-21.  If you're in the area stop by and say hello.

I am attempting to revive the blog.  Maybe not posting as often as I did years ago but maybe once a week...or every couple weeks?  We shall see.  I'm sure I will have a number of photos to post from MN when I get back.  I also have a humor oriented cup giveaway in the works.  But in the meantime...I have a few posts in the works that are a little more content oriented.  The problem I have is a) too many thoughts rolling around in my head and b) not enough time to work those out into a meaningful post.  So here is where you come in:  VOTE!  I have listed 3 options for posts that I have outlined but need to be fleshed out.  Left to my own devices these would sit as ideas for eternity.  So I leave the choice in your hands.  The nominees are:

1. The Yunomi Standard: The retarded economics of pricing handmade pottery.

2. Bringing back the guilds: The relevance of our current educational model with regards to traditional craft and why we should abandon it for a modern adaptation of the traditional apprenticeship.

3. Hoesaling:  Working harder to produce more repetitive work with shorter deadlines for less money.  And why, aside from ulcers, it can be a good idea...at least for the short term.

Much like our own democratic system you hold the illusion of power!  Use it wisely.  Leave me a comment with your choice and I will knock out a post in the next 2-4 weeks.

Cheers!

While packing my car for a show tomorrow I realized I am on the path to less one of a kind and more simple shapes I can make Inexpensively, forget my ego and make some money from the people with limited incomes. I like the shows they attend better than the indoor costly shows. I am doing a four day music festival next week I will have a really good time,if I sell or not and I am making $10 items for the 20 something's that want "art". I am tired of the race to keep up,gonna do what makes me happy! So I vote for a chat about less expensive repetitive work.....completely opposite of what I was saying two years ago,oh well, live and learn

I had my first wholesale order at a show last month, and although it hurt to let the pots go for 40% less than what I charge, it was nice to see them go all at once... no chatting up the customers or hauling them from show to show. I'd like to read more about it, as I think there is a place for it as long as it doesn't take over your life. My second choice is pricing, my nemesis of small business ownership.

How about this..."What are the metrics for being "a professional". I'm watching an awful lot of studio artists working their asses off and talk like they are coming up short. It looks like there's a shifting reality of entrenched expectations. I've met more full time potters throwing in the towel than I've seen figure out the game.

As an amateur potter I'd like to know more about pricing pottery. I have long way to go before I'm ready to think about hoesale.

Voting for guilds!

Pricing... Yo hum, never gonna change that broken record.

Hoesailing...... It has it's place.

Holy trinity: gallery, artist, collector.

Peace out and carrying on!

Make that 155 followers! I just found you via Barbara Donovan. #1....because pricing is such a crap shoot..... and #3 because I used to do a fair amount and then stopped several years ago.

Mark me down for Yunomi first. I know pricing has just about been discussed to death, but I still find it interesting.
Then the Hoesale...because I like gardening implements.
And guilds may not be relevant to my life at the moment, but the education system as a whole makes for good discussion fodder.

As an emerging artist, I vote for 1.
However, 2 sounds like it would be a great conversation as well!

I've priced way too high, way too low, and way too middle. I can't figure it out, and right now I just give my pots to friends and people I want to bless. My vote's for #1!
